Diamonds are Forever?

Tragedy has struck freaders.

Okay, not really tragic, because it can be fixed but, tragic for me.

My engagement ring is cracking. Not the band, the setting would be so much easier if it broke, no, no, the diamond is cracked and needs to be replaced.

I’m devastated. I love my diamond. I love that Hubs picked it out on his own. It really is the perfect engagement ring and finding Old European Cut is difficult because they’re not really made anymore.

We could have it cut down but that would take away about 1/4 carat. I’m not going to brag about the size because 1. it’s tacky to flaunt that information 2. it’s not really anyone’s business. It’s modest, beautiful and incredibly special to me.

But alas, it’s insured. It’ll get replaced. It’s not everything – after all, we’re married now. The engagement ring is a symbol – but it’s a symbol of us, and our engagement was such a special time and I’m just bummed. Super bummed.

I brought it in last week to get the prongs tightened – my mother told me I should get them checked every 6 months or so – so we were sending it in, it was supposed to be gone for about a week. Then on Wednesday when I was going into the city, I got a call from the jeweler – she sold Hubs the engagement ring and our wedding bands. She’s quite fabulous. But she informed me the diamond was deeply cracked and the jeweler didn’t want to tighten the prongs for fear of breaking the diamond. Anything could break it at this point. It’s cracked right where it was cut – one of the more sensitive spots on a diamond. *sigh*

At least it’ll get replaced, and Hubs said we’ll get me a better diamond (he paid a good price, less than it was appraised for) not that I NEED a better one but still. Gah. So upsetting. Having the setting break would just be so much freakin’ easier for me because it’s less expensive (again, thank goodness for insurance) and are easier to order. No, no, it’s gotta be the diamond.

In better news, the wedding photos are FINALLY up on Flickr. Sooo expect wedding pictures/recaps up here and on DC Nearlyweds over the next week. Our photographer was incredible and the photos are absolutely beautiful, if you’re getting married any time soon in the DC area, I HIGHLY recommend her.

Oh no! Insurance is a great thing! My poor SIL lost one of the little diamonds in her engagement ring several times. They had it fixed and then the day after her wedding, there was another one missing! She ended up with entirely new wedding set because the ring had been discontinued. I’ve been lucky, the biggest issue I had was a loose prong!

I’m so sorry about your ring, but at least it can be fixed!

If it makes you feel better, one of the diamonds on the side of my engagement ring near the back fell our 5 days before the wedding! There was a noticeable hole and my husband was not pleased! I had to wait till after the honeymoon to get it fixed! I was just so glad it was in the back so no one really saw it! I felt very naked w/o my engagement ring when it was getting fixed tho!

That sucks. I had a ring from my mother where the diamond cracked and i thought “WHAT THE HECK!!” but i guess it does happen. Totally sucks but thankfully its not lost and is fixable!

Oh no! I would be devastated, too, but I’m relieved it’s insured. Whew!

I can’t see the pic but aw man, that sucks. Yeah I always wonder how durable my diamond ring is. I’ve hit mine against metal and walls (not on purpose, of course! haha). I’m so glad it’s insured.
Just skimmed through your wedding photos. So beautiful! You look SOOOOOO happy! Congrats!

I can’t see the picture (says its unavailable) but oh no!! At least it’s insured, and while I understand the sentimental value (I would prob go nuts if I had to replace mine), at least you can get it replaced. But boooo!!!

I didn’t know diamonds could crack! Sorry to hear about that! (and now i’m praying mine never cracks because we bought it at a GREAT price when a store was going out of business = no insurance)
Thanks for all your shout outs :-) Definitely brings a smile to my face! I will be doing a “best of 2009 list” on the blog so be looking out for what you category you are my favorite of.. (there may actually be more than one if I include your killer dance moves and singing at the reception!)
