Alternatively Titled: Going back for Homecoming for the first time in 3 years and why I can’t wait
I am incredibly lucky.
There are many reasons for this but mostly being that I had an amazing 5 years spent at an amazing university and not only came out with a top-notch education but also with amazing friends and memories.
This weekend? I get to relive them.
It’s that time of year again, the time of year that screams autumn for me – Homecoming. Tailgates (wait, we’re NU, we don’t tailgate!). Hockey. And of course…a wee bit of partying in there. Now, granted our partying has toned down since 2005 when my pals and I all drank bottles of Arbor Mist on our own (we’re a bit classier now) and we all have lives, some of us are married…you know. We’ve, by definition, grown up.
But in tribute to Homecoming weekend, here’s some of my favorite homecoming memories. Freshman year, in the midst of my lingering depression (if you can call it that…never diagnosed but sitting in your room in the dark for hours on end crying probably fits the bill) I didn’t so much celebrate. Nor did I really in 2002. But 2003? Bring it on. I had come into my own by then with good friends (better friends!), and was finding my place.
2003

We partied at the Rugby House that year. E (on the left) would later become my roommate and S (middle) was a bridesmaid in my wedding. The picture on the right was taken @ said “rugby” house – I have no idea who the creepster on the left is, but S and I had been dancing on top of some kid’s bed (everyone was doing it!) I felt bad for the poor schmuck who had to sleep in a bed that had been doused with one too many spills of smirnoff ice.
2004

Scenes from 2004 – my pals and I were (T, myself and The Ex) were on Court. I don’t have pictures from any parties mostly because I didn’t really party that year – the dude I was dating was underage so I couldn’t go out, and well, I believe that we spent most of the night fighting (in part because he was crazy insecure). A fun year but only the lead up to…..
2005

2005 was a lot of fun. I was elected Mayor of Huntington Avenue, I had a great group of pals (well, kind of two separate groups), we had a great time celebrating and well…who remembers the games anyhow.
2006

2006 was the first year to go back as an alum. A great year, and what was more important – the first weekend that Hubs met all my great pals (seen in the picture above) and the first time I took him back to campus (there’s a been a few since).
Each year, different memories, a substantial amount of growth in myself. This year? I’m excited to go back all hitched, like a real grown up, and to be within driving distance. Of course, also to see the renovations to Matthews Arena. Can’t say I’ll be drinking like I’m 21 again but there will be celebrating, fun, and best of all…hockey. HOCKEY!!!! Yesssssss.
Expect pictures to come sooner rather than later.
What are you doing this weekend??
