Giving it up

by Heidi on September 21, 2009

I’ve read a lot about giving up shopping. It kind of makes me ill. Shiver a little bit – sure I have hobbies but I do love to shop. To buy new “pieces” and make/create new outfits and just…gah. I love a bargain, deal and a good ol’ fashioned steal. Cheesy, I know.

But it’s a challenge. The 31-day Don’t Go Over in October challenge – hosted by Career Girls.

I mean, I can do that.

I can…not….shop. for. 31. days.

Also know as the entire month of October. Thirty-one. Days. (breathing deeply…)

Of not shopping. Not even EBay, Jcrew sales, Old Navy, Ann Taylor Loft.

We’re trying to move. I’m taking the Praxis I (and possibly II) by November 1st. I have TWO applications due November 15th and December 1 respectively…. I’m…I don’t have time to shop.Right?  Right.

So – I’m creating a budget for food, entertainment, and travel (since we have a couple trips partially planned that will be assisting our move North).

Expect weekly posts on my withdrawl and expect Monday wants to be frequent. Monday wants still to come today. Promise.

Are you in??? (Bias, you’re crazy if you are! CRAZY LIKE ME!!!!)

P.S. Upon telling Hubs this…I immediately asked if we go to the Outlets this weekend in NY en route to CT so that I might stop at the Vineyard Vines Outlet – maybe something for me….but something def for baby sis-in-law who is studying abroad in Spain and recently celebrated her 20th when we were in Puerto Rico. He said we could. Yesssssss. Hey, sue me, it’s not October 1 till next week!!!

I find that the longer I go without shopping, the easier it is. But I would think, that unless you’re racking up credit card debt, you really can’t do much shopping now, with two jobless people.

The thought of giving up shopping causes me much anxiety… For 2 seconds I thought about joining this shopping ban… but I just don’t know if I’m cut out for it. I’ll have to think about it some more…

Ok, I took a look at that site. It looks actually really interesting and, with the Law school apps (two in Boston!) I thought, “Hmm, wonder if Heidi wants any company on this?” If so, let me know. We could find ways to celebrate our frugality!

And this comes after I was late to work cause I was ordering stuff on Amazon. Darn SlickDeals

See, I wanted to do that, but then I realized something…. not only is my birthday in October, so is Patrick’s… and my mom’s… and we’re traveling… twice.

I am going to give it a shot after the holidays though. Lord knows I’ll probably need to curb shopping once we start getting closer to the wedding, heh.

I am seriously considering doing this… I do need someone to come look at my closet too for new outfits.

Crazy! I am supposed to be mini-vacaying too and not shopping? Ouch.

Hmm I think I like this idea, but I might have to splurge a lot this weekend for my birthday if I’m going to jump on board.

We’re doing something VERY similar for October, decided it right after the wedding. We’ll be cutting waaay back, no shopping, no going out to eat, and only buying gas and the groceries we need, no supermarket luxuries. It’s going to be tough but we definitely need a financial cleanse!

I’m not sure I can do it, but I’m going to set a goal of 15 days instead. I figure that’s a good start, and even that makes me anxious.
