I don’t really want to divulge a lot into what is often the complicated relationship I have with my father. Lately, I’ve been contemplating the father-daughter dance at the wedding. Dad had a few requests, none of which I felt were really…representative of me/our relationship (though this song might be slightly more lyrically appropriate…I kid, I kid…maybe).
My favorite, that I’ve dreamed of dancing with my dad to since I heard it?
Though my father (and step mother) sent me this one to consider. I think I like Michael Buble better…
thoughts? Other suggestions??
What song do you want to or did dance with your father to at your wedding???

we danced to bob dylan’s version of forever young
This may be weird, and it’s definitely out of style, but for me it’s always been Butterfly Kisses. You know, since it came out like 20 years ago
My dad found Eric Clapton’s version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and that was the one for us! It was too perfect – my dad is a huge Clapton fan and the Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie.
(I have a soft spot for Michael Buble!)
We danced to How Sweet It Is by James Taylor. I wanted something more fun and upbeat than the traditional father/daughter songs.
My relationship with my dad doesn’t really fit into any wedding songs either… but I danced with him to I Loved Her First by Heartland and loved it.
“Daddy’s Little Girl” is used in the play “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” (which I was in back in Chicago). Tina’s mother makes her dance to the song with her brother in memory of her deceased father. Of course, Tina is very drunk at that point in the reception, and then her ex-boyfriend tries to liven up the joint by storming the DJ platform and requesting “Freebird”…
Anyway. I think both are nice.
What a great song!!
I’m not even going to watch either of those clips, bc I’m sure they’ll make me cry! I’m with Jackie- I want something more upbeat and am thinking maybe of having Chicago’s “Saturday in the Park.” He was the one who introduced me to Chicago, so it would work nicely!
I have no idea. When the time comes to choose, it’s going to be so difficult.
What is your first dance with your (future) hubby to?
I love Tim McGraw’s “My Little Girl” except for the part that says “he won’t be good enough”.
I also love “I loved her first” by heartland.
for the couples dance I want to do Brad Paisley “I thought I loved you then”
I love the hawaiian version of “over the rainbow
man i have no idea what i’ll dance to, the michael one is pretty though. sort of love his voice.
Pops and I danced to “In My Life” by the Beatles. Here’s a link to the lyrics, if you’re curious: http://www.energyexpressband.com/lyrics/wedding%20lyrics%20in%20my%20life%20beatles.htm
While I’m not going to say what I want to dance with my dad to (mostly because I think we may ACTUALLY be the first ones…), I will say that the sweetest “Daddy Daughter Dance” I saw was last summer. They danced to “My Girl”, and it was just too sweet. It’s a great option that’s upbeat, and can be as sentimental or as low-key as you’d like.
Um…is it totally awful that my wedding was only three years ago, and I can’t remember what song my dad and I danced to? I am a horrible person.
we danced to the song from American Tale, Fievel’s version, of “somewhere out there”. it was a song we loved to sing together when I was a child. And it was quite difficult to find the Fievel version for the wedding. My dad wept like a baby the whole dance.
Good luck on your decision.
Ahhh!! I’m so excited that Michael Buble has a version of that song! It’s actually an old, old, OLD song by an Italian singer, Al Martino (think Perry Como) and my Dad loves it, but it was recorded soooo long ago that the sound quality is awful… plus it has that “old” sound to it. I will have to send this to him…
I’ll be honest. I didn’t even listen to Michael Buble’s version because I know I’d cry my eyes out. But you’re awesome in my book for even featuring him. I get laughs from everyone because I like…no adore him.
When I got married two months ago, the dad/daughter dance was the one detail I lost sleep over. I wanted something that was a nice tribute an something that wouldn’t make me cry my eyes out. I chose a very old song by Lefty Frizzell called the Mom and Dads Waltz. The original version was very “twangy” but our band did a beautiful acoustic version. It was easy to dance to, a nice tribute to both my parents and was the kind of song that puts a smile on your face about happy memories instead of being as emotional as some dad/daughter dances are.
My Dad and I danced to “What a Wonderful World” by Louie Armstrong. Sweet and classic.
Good luck choosing!
