“Fat” Chicks Can Write Too!

by Heidi on March 16, 2009

Megan McCain is officially my hero.

Apparently Laura Ingraham criticized her for saying that “Republicans should compromise with Democrats.” Ingraham, according to CNN, called McCain “a Valley Girl gone awry” and a “plus-sized model.”

So, this girl, who has portrayed a campaign from a unique perspective, and become a – what I would consider – respected blogger – apparently is considered too fat to write? Megan retaliated saying:

“Why, after all this time and all the progress feminists have made, is weight still such an issue? And in Laura’s case, why in the world would a woman raise it?” [The Daily Beast]

Unfortunately, I’ve never listened to Laura Ingraham, I generally steer away from radio talk shows aside from NPR which is Fiance’s preferred radio station during the week. But still, what kind of impression is that for young girls who want to speak their mind? What kind of impression does that give them that if they don’t write something that everyone agrees with their opinion is worth jack? That’s kind of crappy Laura Ingraham. Very crappy. As women, shouldn’t we, as Megan says, be a better example for the younger gals of our time and criticize substantively in this case rather than about petty matters such as one’s body size?

So, here’s my kudos to you, Megan McCain. A girl of my own heart, Kerry 2004 supporter turned GOP Gal. A GOP gal with an awesome sense of style, a distinctive and unique voice and a rockin’ taste in tunes. Who cares what bitter jerks like Laura Ingraham think, you have every right to voice your opinion. There will always be naysayers, but hopefully they can focus on the ideological and substantive arguments at hand and leave your and every other woman’s weight/body out of it.

I love her blog, really. And I just think the weight comment is so petty, and hits home with me. Narrow-mindedness has no place in news, but I guess in the political world, it’s sadly become commonplace and… expected.

And since when is a size 8 fat? It’s that more “realistic?” Give me a break. You go girl!

As much as I might disagree with her politics, I so appreciate Meghan McCain’s voice. And what’s that saying, “Great people talk about ideas.
Average people talk about things. Small people talk about other people.”? Yeah, Laura Ingraham…about that. Such an unnecessary (and untrue!) attack by one woman on another.

I love this. Our world is seriously twisted “when we think a size 8 is fat”… REDONCULOUS!

Good for her. I’m a tiny girl and a registered Republican (moderate, but registered nonetheless) and I am STILL insulted by the vitriol coming out of Laura Ingram. I’m proud of Meghan’s decision to speak back and speak out. Women ought to to feel good about their bodies at any size and no matter what ideas concerning body sizes have NO place in ANY political debate.

I can’t believe that this happend. I mean aren’t we all grownups?

Oh my god, I WISH I were a size 8. I guess I should stop writing, because I’m “fatter” than Meghan McCain.

That’s so obnoxious! And silly, because in politics, there are always better ways to argue. You don’t ever have to get into someone’s appearance. Go Meghan!

Sometimes I think weight discrimination is the final frontier — even beyond sexual orientation. There’s not enough outrage about things like this. How absolutely petty.

  • http://whall.org/blog whall

I’m not sure I get the outrage. I think people hear “Republican woman called someone fat” and then get all up in arms. So I wanted to know what was actually said, since I don’t listen to Laura Ingraham nor do I read Meghan’s blog.

    Here’s what I found:
Meghan, do you think that anyone would be talking to you if you weren’t kind of cute and you weren’t the daughter of John McCain? OK. “I was really hoping that I was going to get that role in the ‘Real World,’ but then I realized that, well, they don’t like plus-sized models.”

I still don’t get the feeling that she called her fat. She didn’t belittle her for her weight. What’s wrong with plus size, anyway? And my understanding of plus size is 12-20 and beyond, and plus size magazines use size 8 and 10 people to show off their clothes, right?

And she was right. Real World doesn’t like plus sized models.

Hey wait a second! She called her a “model”! OMG I CAN’T BELIEVE SHE CALLED HER A MODEL! WHAT AN OUTRAGE! SHE’S NOT UPPITY AND PURGING AND CRAPS ALL OVER HER FRIENDS!!!!

Mainly? People just like hating and will take almost any excuse to do so.
