Blonde Tendencies

by Heidi on December 17, 2008

I’m a blonde by nature. So it says on my birth certificate – blonde hair, brown eyes. Now a days, my hair is more dark blonde, and my eyes more hazel. Genetics perhaps? Who knows. However, my personality has a tendency to sometimes be…slightly flaky and I am often forgetful often reminding me of that blonde hair classification – leading into the flaky blonde stereotype blah blah blah. Not all of us are flaky, we just…get ahead of ourselves. Easily excitable. There are better terms than “dumb blonde” or “ditzy” but they all generally imply the same thing. I digress…

Sometimes, I have a bad habit that I lend to my hair color – my forgetfulness. I’ve left things on the metro various times – we all remember this regrettable incident right? Although, in my own blonde defense,  that was probably less so my hair color and more so my level of inebriation.

Twice now, at least, I’ve left umbrella’s on the metro. I usually realize it quickly and kick myself telling me I need to pay better attention. Earlier this spring, Fiancé and I were heading to see U2-3D down at the IMax at the Natural History Museum. It had been raining and I had just bought a new umbrella from Macy’s a few days prior. We had a decent wait for the metro so we sat on a bench, I set my umbrella down, minutes later our train comes – “CRAP!” I exclaimed looking over to the bench as I sit down and see my spankin’ new umbrella sitting there. All alone.

The doors beeped, fiancé offered to go get it, but I knew he’d miss the train and the train behind us was an even longer wait. The doors closed as he stood up to walk out of the train. He sat back down and we watched my umbrella sit on the bench by itself, destined for a new owner or the WMATA lost and found.

A few days ago, enter a new umbrella, one that fiancé and I had been using since his last job, likely for over a year. It was a free gift, who knows where he got it from but it was compact and fit well in both of our bags. The other day it had been raining and I was getting on the metro to go to my alumni holiday happy hour. As I’m stepping off of the metro at Metro Center I realized my umbrella was sitting on the vent next to the seat that I just left. I had forgotten yet another umbrella on the metro.

Since then, the need for an umbrella has been…minimal to say the least. I’ve been lucky if you will, not having to walk too far and if it’s raining when we take the pup out, we have a ginormous golf umbrella to keep us (and her – she hates the rain) dry.

Until last night that is.

Fiancé had his company happy hour near Cap South. A bar full of smiling conservatives with country tunes playing in the background. It was a fun time till we walked out the door and saw the pouring rain that we had to walk home in. Now granted it was only 7 1/2 blocks but when you end up walking through puddle after puddle and are sopping wet by the time you get home…that 7 1/2 blocks seems like an eternity.

So tonight, I’m going to do a little bit o’ Christmas shopping and in the mean time since there’s plenty of rain left in the forecast, I might pick u,p an umbrella. A cute one. Though not too expensive, because like sunglasses, they have a short life when owned by me (my sunglasses have an average lifespan of 3 months thus I don’t spend more than $20 on a pair). Hopefully, I won’t lose this one.

I’m clumsy and forgetful, but have no blonde hair to blame it on.

you should get in touch with a vendor and buy a case of the $3 ones from china. they’re cheap but they work (the same thing everyone uses to giveaway with their logo on it). this way you wouldn’t have to feel guilty about losing one on a train because it hardly cost anything and you’ve got a case full at home

My mom had this problem too. She solved it by buying the ugliest umbrella she could find. It’s so ugly she almost WANTS to lose it. Therefore she never forgets it anywhere.

Aww. I just bought a new umbrella from the Shaws near Hynes…it’s pink, and I’m hoping the Boston wind won’t kill it as it did my purple flower umbrella..

I just left an umbrella on the metro last week! I was so mad. Luckily there’s a Macy’s only a block away from my workplace, so I walked over on Monday and bought a new one. :)

I left a $250 pair of Prada sunglasses at Rumors on 19th and M last summer.

My sunglasses have a cap of $50 now.
