Before You Throw Tomatoes….

by Heidi on December 9, 2008

I should preface the following text with the fact that:

1. I have no interest in Twilight – the movie or the books.

2. I had no interest in Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings (which I feel in this situation are comparable)

3. My book and movie taste may be questionable, but still.

4. I don’t do fanatical stuff (see #2)

Now note the conversation I had this morning with a pal over the GChat…

me: dude is it just me or Twilight totally overrated?
i have no interest in the books
i have no interest in the movie
but everyone acts like it’s the second fucking coming of christ
Friend: Twilight is glorified fanfic written by someone who probably has Lord of the Rings dreams
me: if that’s the case
then WHY WHY WHY did Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon
get FIRST in the box office sales over
twilight this past weekend
Friend: Yay!
me: because i dunno about you
but Vince Vaughn is certainly not a looker
Friend: 4 Christmases > Twilight
me: though neither is this edward douchebag from twilight<
Friend: He looks like drug addict
me: I KNOW!

I’ve been kind of holding my tongue on this matter but with all the Edward fanaticism and the Twilight super fans, I feel I had to make it known that there are people…possibly people you know…who disagree about the movie of the year. I don’t claim to be a movie buff, nor do I claim to have the best taste in movies (seriously, I adored Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants not sure I have room to talk about critiquing a YA novel to movie series. I just…don’t enjoy the fantasy aspect of YA novels. Not a fan. Not my thing. But to all of you super-fans? Whatever tickles your pickle I guess.

But I had to speak up. It’s just that as of late I’ve just gotten so…dare I say it…bored of reading all my favorite blogs being all gung ho Twilight and omgomgomgomgomg Edward *swoon.* Seriously, bless your heart gals, I love you all but….I dunno…isn’t there something better to blog about? I mean it’s Christmas! It’s super stress end of finals/end of year/end of everything season! Right? There’s awesome music (definition of awesome this time of year is Wham. No ifs ands or buts about it), awesome teevee specials (read Charlie Brown Christmas Special that Fiance and I watched last night), etc…you name it…the holiday season is just awesome. But some how 4 out of 5 blogs still mention something about Twilight every day. Or almost every day. I may be exaggerating. Isn’t it all old news yet? Kind of like Britney’s comeback, Speidi’s wedding, and the stalker of Paula Abdul…isn’t it all old news yet??? (emphasis on Speidi’s wedding there)

Maybe that’s just me. So throw all the tomatoes you want, but I just want those of you anti-twilighters out there to know that we do exist. Apparently a lot of us for that matter as Four Christmases (WHICH I STILL WANT TO SEE!!!! Who wants to go this weekend???) beat Twilight in the box offices. For the second week in a row. So HA!

So there. Keep blogging about Edward whatshisname blah blah blah and how you plan on going to see Twilight againandagainandagain….I’ll just keep clicking “mark all as read” :)

I’ve been so anti-blogosphere lately – sorry gals/and dudes…I firmly blame it on PMS. Because I can.

i’ve never read the books either and have zero interest in them or the movie but from everything i’ve read and heard i’m blown away by the reactions. supposedly this main characted Edward is supposed to be this dream creature who is everything you could ever want and that lousy looking actor is all they could find to personify this swoon-worthy character? not even close folks, not even close. and don’t even get me started on the girl who stars opposite him. she’s watched too much Alicia Silverstone & Neve Campbell and is now taking the pursed mouth/squinty eyed thing a little too far. and what’s with acting like you don’t want to be at interviews?!? this is the biggest you’ll ever be girl, enjoy it while you can. and Sit Up Straight for JC sake!
… in short, i’m with you on this.

Ahaha, I love that my fanfic convo quote made it in.

And Emily can suck it. :-)

I’m kind of with you. I had never even heard of Twilight until just a month or so ago. I honestly do want to read the first one because I’d like to see what all the fuss is about, but other than that I can’t say that even if I like it I’d fall in love with a fictional character and blog all the time about him. I mean, i might drool over a hot celebrity from time to time, but at least such a person exists out there somewhere. I was never into Lord of the Rings either, but I must admit that I LOVED all of the Harry Potter books. I think it reminds me in some weird way of CS Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia that I loved as a kid. But still… even though I’m ok with the occasional fantasy, it doesn’t really become something that I’m obsessed with… So I don’t get the Twilight stuff either. If I figure it out when I read the first one, I’ll let you know. :)

Haven’t read the Harry Potter or Twilight books. Don’t care to. I’d probably watch the movies on TV, but only if I had nothing better to do.

  • http://www.newlyweddedwife.com Laurie

Haha, I’m with you on this!

While I love Harry Potter – I don’t know about this Twilight business. My sister lent me the book, but I don’t know if or when I’ll read it.

  • http://goodthingscometothosewhowhine.blogspot.com Arielle

Amen sista. I had never heard of Twilight before the blog world went berserk about it. I despite trashy chick lit and it’s books like Twilight that reinforce my opinion that reading is NOT, by definition, a better use of your time than watching television. I do love Harry Potter because I’m a fantasy nerd, but I will never read this bogus Twilight nonsense.

i’ll eventually stop posting about rob pattinson but it’s a given that whenever i get hooked on something, i’m hooked. example: i posted about ryan gosling for two straight weeks almost every day until i met him. i just don’t stop. but hopefully you’ll still read the other stuff on my blog non-twilight related :)

  • http://naysmusings.blogspot.com Renee

YAY! I’ve never read Harry Potter, never really got into Lord of the Rings, and though I read the book, I never saw the second Sisterhood movie. It makes me feel old, but I’m okay about not getting caught up in the hype. So, yay for anti-Twilight nonsense!!

  • http://nowillneverbeateenmodel.blogspot.com Melanie

Im with ya girl! Anti-Twilight power!!!

  • http://theneatos.wordpress.com/ prettyneato

I’m a vampire fan, and I came across the book in the airport over the summer, and it was a quick, easy entertaining read. The movie? Well, my boss had tix to the midnight showing and I went. It was really, kind of, a whole lot of bad.

I have never read or watched Harry Potter. And I have no desire to.

  • http://confessionsofajerseygirl.wordpress.com Rachel

i love you for writing this. i’ve had the twilight book in my possession for WEEKS now and i can’t bring myself to read it. i wanted to, i wanted to understand the hype… but i can’t get past that kid with the hair.

  • http://goodgirlgoneblog.typepad.com Good Girl Gone Blog

hmm I never read the books or saw the movie either…but the 9 year old girl I babysit for just told me she’s OBSESSED with the movie. Again, she’s 9, that should tell you something.

  • http://jenniferblack6305.blogspot.com Jennifer Black

I haven’t bought into this Twilightmania. I might be hooked if I read the book, but I am avoiding it. I might watch the movie when it comes out on video.

  • http://lifeaccordingtob.wordpress.com/ B

I agree…don’t know what the fuss is about. (but I think I may read the book though :$)

  • http://www.lifeaslist.blogspot.com Liz

Ha! I could not agree more with regard to H.Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Twilight. In fact, I have fond memories of scowling/ rolling my eyes at people reading the final H.Potter book the summer before last on the metro … which seemed to happen constantly.

  • http://missmusing.blogspot.com Miss Musing

I’m with you on this one (I don’t like HP and fantasy either) and I’m really not into Twilight. I gave it shot, but it’s not my thing.

  • http://themoderngal.blogspot.com The Modern Gal

Yep, I’ve been marking as read the Twilight posts. I plan to eventually read the book, just because I read nearly everything, but I’ve never obssessed over any book (and I have read Harry Potter — good, but not so good it’s worth obssessing over).

Your anti-blogosphere comment struck a note with me. I’ve been holding my tongue on a lot of my thoughts lately. There have been some attitudes/drama I’ve been tiring of lately in the blogosphere. I’ll say no more, lest I piss anyone off.

  • http://backtogood.wordpress.com Chris

    I agree with you! Yay!

  • http://reederscorner.wordpress.com reederscorner

Twilight (the book and movie) have kind of blown up, hasn’t it… it’s freaking everywhere. Normally I don’t get drawn into those types of things and I generally like to read other things, but my brother bought me a copy of Twilight so I feel obliged to read it. LOL

I didn’t get into the Harry Potter thing… or the Da Vinci Code thing… too much hype.

  • http://zubrowka24.blogspot.com Lexi

HP and Twilight? No gracias. Quatro Navidads? Si, porfavor!

(I have no idea why I felt the need to write that in Spanish!

  • http://talenttoplay.blogspot.com Playful Professional

I do think it’s funny that you’re so sick of Twilight on blogs but you wrote a Twilight post yourself :) To each their own I guess. There are definitely things that as soon as I read on a blog (we’ll use weddings as an example for me) will make me mark it as read. Isn’t it great we don’t have to read anything we don’t want to? Now Dewey on the other hand… I’m interested to see what you think about that one.

  • http://www.svrspy.blogspot.com Scarlet

    Definitely won’t throw tomatoes:)

I work in a bookstore so I was sort of force-fed the books (and before Twilight, the Harry Potter books). I can’t do LOTR, though-YUCK. I resisted both series until after the mania, but I do really enjoy both. I think Harry Potter is written way better and are the types of books that you can reread over and over and still realize new things. It was also cool while the series was slowly published that they got more complex from the first to the seventh- I thought that was great for the kids they were written for (but we adults took, haha).

Twilight, like I did write about on my blog (but I hope I didn’t sound fanatical!), is not fine literature and even the story has some holes, but I found it to be pretty entertaining. I also saw the movie and again, while not a fine film, it definitely entertained me. I do think Edward/Robert Pattinson is hott, but he’s probably also my “type” of guy (read: bad boy, haha. not dirty). I don’t fantasize about vampires, but it is a nice daydream to have some amazingly hott guy want to only be with you.

I have definitely heard a lot of people go way overboard with it all, though. I hope *I* don’t sound like one of them.

And I watched Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 the other night and LOVED it.

  • http://www.svrspy.blogspot.com Scarlet

OH, and I saw Four Christmases. I think Vince Vaughn is adorable. He’s so tall-Love! I liked it. It was funny, but to be honest, if I were to buy one, it would be Twilight. DON’T HATE!:)

  • http://www.clevergirlgoesblog.com tia

not everyone’s gig, for sure. but the 14 year old girl in me just can’t get enough.

and i LOVE the fact that he looks like a drug addict. don’t know what that says about me, but i’m sure it can’t be good. hahaha.

  • http://www.nonsequiturchica.blogspot.com KT

I have not read the Twilight books, nor will I. I will also not see the movie.

I have not read any of the Harry Potter books, nor will I. I will also not see any of the movies.

I have never read any of the Lord of the Rings books, nor will I. However, my fiance sat me down and made me watch the movies. You know what? I liked them. And would watch them again.

  • http://www.angelaboration.com Angela

Um, Vince Vaughan is HOT. Have you seen Old School? That bit in the gymnastics montage when he’s doing the rings? HOT.

That said, I have no desire to see 4 Christmases OR that vampire movie. *shrugs*

  • http://notthelifeiordered.wordpress.com Ashley

I love you for this post. I DO NOT understand this damn obsession with Twilight! Not in the least!!

BTW when my post gets up there, theres going to be some bloggy love! :)

  • http://douchegirl.blogspot.com douchegirl

Haha I’m one of those Twilight obsessed girls which is weird because up until a month or two ago I had no idea the books even existed. I actually bought the book just to “see what all the fuss was about” and got hooked. I hated the movie though. It was very, very insanely stupid.

I had been wondering what non-Twilight fans think when they read Twilight posts and now I know.

  • http://heidikins.com heidikins

I read the Lord of the Rings books in junior high. I read the Harry Potter books–except for the last one. I refuse to read Twilight. I refuse to watch Twilight. I generally skip blogs that post Twilight, Vampires, or anything to do with Edward.

THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS! The non-crazed Internets thanks you.
