White House Goes Pink?

by Heidi on October 7, 2008

Legally Blonde’s infamous Elle Woods once came to Washington wearing a lot of pink trying to make a difference. Since then, army’s of women – good and bad depending on your politics (i’m talking Komen for the Cure, Avon walk for the Cure…the good pinks, and Code PINK…aka women who give pink a bad rap). This year, in honor of pink October, First Lady Laura Bush “painted” (and by painted I might lighted) the white house in pink.

“During a ceremony at the White House, First Lady Laura Bush flipped a switch and suddenly a building that has been white ever since John and Abigail Adams took up residence there in 1800 was suddenly pink. She said:

We’re showing our support of breast cancer awareness and research in a historic way. In recognition of the mothers, daughters, sisters and wives who struggle with this disease, we’re lighting the White House in pink, which is the color of the cause. May our lights tonight shine as beacons around the world, a signal of the United States’ commitment to saving lives for breast cancer.”

Kudos to Laura Bush and all the other women around the world who are working hard to raise awareness of this horrible disease.

Speaking of Laura Bush, I’m about 100 pages away from finishing “Cancer is a Bitch” by Gail Konop Baker (which is INCREDIBLE btw) and then I’m planning on reading “American Wife” by Curtis Sittenfeld – a fiction novel loosely based on Laura’s biography. I’ve heard incredible things so I’m pretty excited for this.

I love it! And not just because my mom is a breast cancer survivor. Now I wish that the bag that I’m giving away on my blog this week was pink… Well the lining is – so that’s something right?

I’ just got the American Wife in the mail, and I’m very excited about it!

    Wow, this is wonderful.

What a neat idea! I love that Laura Bush did that–and I would have LOVED to see the White House all pink. More people need to be aware of the disease; it’s lovely seeing so many people involved.

As for the book, i’m a tentative Curtis Sittenfeld fan. I LOVED Prep, but thought her second book was not good at all. So i’m definitely planning on reading American Wife, but a tad bit nervous.

What a great idea! I wish I had seen it in person!

Legally Blonde is one of my favorite movies and I actually saw it on Broadway, haha! (I didn’t care as much for Legally Blonde 2, although her pink outfits were very cute).

About the book, American Wife, I bought it off Amazon a few weeks ago but haven’t read it yet. I can’t wait to hear what you think.

As you know, I really liked the book, so I’ll be anxious to see what everyone else thinks. It’s funny, bc when I first heard about it, I was wary, bc I didn’t like Prep that much and haven’t read her second book bc of that!

PS. Was the Pink House a one time deal? Or are they doing it all month? I want to see it!

I must say, that’s a pretty cool idea about the pink White House. I’m never there at night, though! Maybe I’ll have to make a special point to check it out this month. :)
