Pink for October

by Heidi on October 1, 2008

Happy October everyone!

As you all know (aside from being the month where i run marathon #2 – 10 days! and marking 11 months till i get married!) this month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so this month I’m going to try to pass along awareness, ways you can support the cause and other surprises (o.O cryptic)

I’m Going Pink for October….are you?

Fun Fact: Last week, the House and Senate both passed HR 1157 a bill to have the National Institutes of Health study causes of breast cancer. The bill authorizes $40 million in additional annual spending through FY2012 to the NIH for research-related activities.  It also sets up an Interagency Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Coordinating Committee within the Department of Health and Human Services, which would be staffed by advocates and members of scientific and medical communities, to make recommendations and solicit proposals for breast cancer research. The bill is now going to the President to await his signature.

I just finished writing a comment on another blog about how much cancer research has helped my family. We owe my mother’s recoveries to the all of the people who contribute their time, money and lives. Of course – there is no cure yet, but the fact that my mother is alive and enjoying that life is a testimony to how far we’ve come.

Since you’ve already gone pink, perhaps you’d also like to also take part in our month-long contest?

There is also a “Share Your Story” segment where you can share a true story, or encourage your friend/family/neighbour/colleague to share theirs.

Head on to Pink for October website for more details! :D

What a great cause! My sorority was focused on breast cancer awareness, and it’s incredible to see how many people are affected by it. It’s encouraging talking to survivors about their fights and eventual victory.
