Breast Milk is for babies…not for ice cream

by Heidi on September 24, 2008

I saw this over at Jennsylvania (my hero) and had to share….

“From WNBC.com:

VERMONT — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow’s milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

“PETA’s request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow’s milk in the food he serves,” the statement says.

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

“The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn’t make sense,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Everyone knows that ‘the breast is best,’ so Ben & Jerry’s could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk.”

In a statement Ben and Jerry’s said, “We applaud PETA’s novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother’s milk is best used for her child.”

Oh. Em. Eff. Gee. Seriously…like…gross. Gross. Gross. Gross. Sorry PETA, I DO NOT want random baby mama’s breast milk* in my ice cream. I prefer my Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough without a side of breast milk. Thank you B&J for preserving the sanctity of your fabulous Ice Cream and for not making my state live more up to it’s hippy breeding ground stereotype than it already does.

*I should note that I am not denoting breast feeding children, however I do believe that children should not be breast fed after a certain point (for instance…3 years old might be a bit too old but who am I to judge after all I’m not a mother) nor should breast milk replace…you know…regular milk. But that’s just my humble opinion.

I laughed so hard when I read about this. It’s a publicity stunt, of course. They’re not serious. Dairy farming is pretty nasty, though. That’s why I eat soy ice cream. :)

Thats an interesting article. It makes you think twice what you pour over your cereal and melt on your pizza’s.

I can see the point, Milk is milk – why not get it from your own species as it was made for.

It’s like eggs. Better just to not think about what you are eating and just enjoy the taste.

So PETA is for herding pregnant women and breeding them in farms? I mean, what happens when we’re low on supply? Do we send congressmen out to address the issue personally?

“I was just helping those poor man-dairy farmers get more supply”
