My First Time

by Heidi on August 22, 2008

I had my first experience bridal gown shopping yesterday. Big sister (aka Maid of Honor) and her boyfriend (BAH!) went shopping with me to a couple places in Old Town. Not gonna lie…it was kind of fun.

We first stopped at Le Star Bridal on King Street. I wasn’t planning on trying any dresses on, so I hadn’t made any appointments. The woman there was very helpful however, the one dress I found, she took off the mannequin, and helped me try it on. We weren’t supposed to take pictures, however my sister and I each got one while it was still on the mannequin.

As I mentioned before, I was looking for simple…no lace, no frills. This dress had a minimum amount of lace around the bottom and in the bust line with a sash around the waist. It had a bunched skirt and when i tried it on, it was…perfect. But I wasn’t ready for perfect yet. I can’t get the dress out of my head, but oh man…it might be the dress (Fiancé if you click those links I’ll beat you down)

Next we went to Ellie’s Bridal on Washington Street. I didn’t see anything there. There was one girl there trying dresses on, so we just browsed. Gossypia was similar in the strike out department. I wasn’t discouraged because we still had one more left, i had read some pretty terrible reviews of Hannelore’s but I figured “since we’re down here…” So i go in, fill out the information card, and a short, Latina woman comes to help me out grabbing a few dresses right away – strapless, embossed dresses. Dresses that were nearing on the line of “too expensive” but try them on? Sure why not. There were a couple that i liked well enough but because the woman was a little pushy and rude, I probably won’t go back there when the mothers are down.

Until she insisted I try on a dress with a v neck, wide straps and crinoline that just kind of hung on me. It was pretty hideous, and went for about $3200. It was…wretched. My sister found a dress on sale for $900…it was pretty, but the lady wouldn’t even LET me try it on…”it won’t fit her. It’s too small” !!!!!!! NONE OF THE DRESSES FIT LADY! I mean…really, I didn’t expect them to because I know they take your measurements and then order it after…but really? Not even letting me try it on? Telling me it’s too small and won’t fit? Is that really something you should be saying to a bride to be when she’s trying gowns on??? Probably not….just sayin’.

I brushed the dirt off my shoulders, tried on a couple more that big sister picked out for me then we left, I said I’d be in touch next month (which I won’t likely) and we headed back to the apartment to meet Fiancé for drinks at Finns.

All in all, I have a better sense of what I want. “Simple elegance” is along the lines of what I’m looking for…I’m no longer entirely opposed to lace, but in small amounts. I still have at least three more places to look for dresses at before the mothers come down in September. But at least I can rule places out!

I love that dress!!!! When I go dress shopping (when I get engaged) something in that style will be what I try on first. So pretty!!

Yay! I’m glad your first experience was mostly positive! And that dress you love? GORGEOUS. I found my dress early on in the process (second store I looked), then kept shopping for awhile and realized nothing else measured up. But it’s good to keep looking because then you get a good idea of what does and doesn’t work, what elements are particularly flattering on you, and what you think is overdone and boring, and then when you go back and try on the other dress again, you can tell with a more experienced eye if it’s the one for sure.

this makes me so excited! i really can’t wait to have my own nightmare-bridal-shop stories. i have an idea of what i want but i really believe you have to try on every thing to make sure. so trying on the hideous V neck = necessary. good luck!! so fun…

I went with a friend to Hannelore’s a few years ago – I found it very intimidating. If you decide you want higher-end, Priscilla of Boston in Tyson’s had really beautiful gowns, and the service was excellent.

The dress that “might be the dress” is beautiful.

That one that you like is VERY pretty.

When I was a bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding a few years back, she was trying on dresses I think at a David’s Bridal somewhere (enter bad music here) and she and her mom were trying to decide if the off white was a good shade on her, since she’s so pale. They asked the salesperson, and she said something like, “well it doesn’t matter if it’s white or off white, [bride] has been living with her fiance for 2 years, right?” So basically insinuating that who cared if she wore white or off white, cause she was already living in sin! Hahaha. They threw the dress off, and marched out of the store. Good job saleslady!

I think “can’t get it out of my head” is a good sign. It’s absolutely beautiful and very you.

But you’re right to cruise around a bit more.

Ugh, yea I am not looking forward to bitchy wedding people. We all know I’m on the bigger side of the spectrum and dress shopping is supposed to be a fun time! I’m happy with how I am and I know I’ll be shrinking before the wedding, but I’m plus sized. It’s a serious concern of mine.

How absolutely effing rude. I hate people who do not value customers who pretty much keep the roof over their heads. Well then.. the dress is fantabulous.

    How exciting!

My girlfriend is getting that dress! Well, we’re at least taking the photos I snuck to a seamstress who’s going to make a nice knockoff for her.

  • http://www.steague.blogspot.com Stephanie

Wtf? I can’t believe she wouldn’t even let you try on the dress. What a biotch.

I literally *gasped* when I saw that dress. The gathering is so beautiful! My mom was looking over my shoulder (trying to explain blogging to her) and she approves as well.

Hmm, maybe if I give her your blog address she can just live vicariously through your plans instead of trying to get me to get married…

You know, I don’t think I’d enjoy the wedding dress shopping process so much. But that’s JUST ME…and I can be strange about such things. :) Hope you find the right one soon!

Hmm, I don’t think I’d enjoy wedding dress shopping very much, especially if I had a rude assistant like you had! o.O
