About proper office wear.

Good office wear vs.bad office wear
Now I don’t need to ramble on about the difference between the two outfits, but the one on the left would be classified as GOOD office wear. The one on the right? BAD office wear. Her outfit? Leaned a bit closer to the right outfit than it should have. I know it’s Friday but we don’t practice Beach Casual Fridays.

I speak on this because I’ve gotten yelled at a couple times from a couple different employers about pants that may have been a little low and shirts that showed off a little too much cleavage. But I learned my lesson and am now a frequent shopper at ATL, JCrew, BR, and all the “sophisticated young professional” stores out there. Even if they are…dare I say…not exactly in my budget :X

However, never in my ten years of working various jobs with varying levels of casualness, have i dressed like I was going to the beach. Personally, I don’t think skirts that are more than an inch above the knee are appropriate and nor are low cut sleeveless shirts. But that my friends, is how our intern is dressed today.

She’s been known to err on the side of dare I say, inappropriate, though I don’t believe anyone’s said anything to her. Once wearing a slightly low cut, a little too short sun dress one day, and today it’s a cute little floral flouncy, ruffle skirt that is about two inches too short with flip flops. The shirt, is covered by a cardigan (ok. Two points for that much), and it is not so low cut that it’s a problem. But the skirt? Too much

She looks like she’s going to the beach. I saw her and i was like “really??? is that appropriate???”  I shouldn’t talk about the flip flops, because I wear them too. Rarely around the office, I have at least four pairs of heels under my desk that I can change into on a moments notice since I know that some higher ups in our office hate hate HATE flip flops. Not to mention, we all know flip flops are unprofessional, but they’re comfy, cool and easy to walk to and fro the metro in.

Man, I wish I was going to the beach. Unfortunately for me, I’m nursing a budding sinus infection that has my head feeling three times it’s actual size and a nose that I can’t breathe out of. Kind of sucks. But, at least I’m appropriately dressed?

Call me judgmental but I come from experience man and I don’t see her getting pulled into a conference room to have a chat with the boss lady like I had at Job #1 in DC (evil Georgetown Law Firm).

In other news, I want to go shopping. Ann Taylor Loft is having an amazing “Buy one get one 50% off” sale this weekend! Only! I want to go spend my Forever 21 gift card I got for returning stuff. I want to go to the gym for the 9th time this month (in 3 weeks!) so i get my $50 reimbursement. Unfortunately, my body is achy, my head is stuffy and really? I just want to go home and sleep. Maybe I’ll go over after work tomorrow afternoon. I’m too tired for now :(

Yeah, I’m thinking that beach wear is a big no-no. One of our younger employees wore a see-through white shirt the other day with only a bra underneath.

Ew, that is totally inappropriate. I’m with you; it’s not too hard to figure out what’s appropriate.

I don’t know why people would long to dress like that at work. I’m dying to be able to spend all my money on adorable work outfits from BR and J.Crew.

we had an intern that constantly dressed like she was going to a club, it was hilarious. you’d think they get it at some point.

Wait, only 1 inch above the knee!?

Because I’d totally wear that skirt on the left…and it’s way more than 1 inch above the knee…

    Oh, no. :-P

Man oh man. I don’t know how I would feel about her getting away with wearing an outfit like that when you’ve gotten called out several times. Really not fair.

I’m judgmental about this stuff too. There’s a woman at my office who has this one skirt that she wears regularly that ends like four inches above her knee AND HAS A SLIT. A long one. Every time I see her wearing the skirt my jaw drops again. SO INAPPROPRIATE.

Ugh. Office attire. Something I don’t have to wear (as I work in a lab) and yet also have strong opinions about. Opinions like – you are so right. INAPPROPRIATE!!!

Um yeah. So not appropriate. I have some ideas about what should or shouldn’t be allowed in the workplace, but beach wear doesn’t factor into my ideas at all.

Hilarious! I actually work 2 blocks from the beach in Southern California, and we don’t allow that attire!

I do keep a pair of flipflops in my desk drawer for lunchtime beach walks, though!

Starting my new job I’m learning quickly what is and isn’t appropriate. It’s been funny coming into the job though bedcause I work mostly with guys, and they tend to pay a lot of attention to me. I find that I need to be very careful about what I wear. ATL is great :)

So inappropriate! I either wear full suits or dress shirts with a skirt to my knee. Always closed-toe heels or pumps, never above three inches. But we do have an intern who is slightly larger (nothing wrong with that) who dresses like she is a size four (plenty wrong with that). She never fully fits into her clothing and there is always skin sticking out in places where it shouldn’t.

alright, i’m not gonna lie. i’m that girl. i work in an office that is litterally a stones throw from the beautiful ocean (seriously, i can see the water from my desk…) and i wear a sundress almost every day. and flips. somedays? even a strapless sundress. i don’t know how i get away with it most days, i only do it because i know i can get away with it. :o )
