Being in a rut

by Heidi on July 2, 2008

I don’t know what it is – though I bet my all white cube with no windows can be largely to blame – but I feel in a rut.

I’m unmotivated, uninspired – all these pretty wedding blogs can’t even get me excited!

I don’t quite know what’s wrong with me but outside of work, everything is fine, great even! We’re going to CT and then to VT. We’re hoping by the end of the month to have our deposit on our reception site and we’re even looking into getting a second puppy.

But at work, I’m unmotivated. I couldn’t find the energy to drag my butt down to the gym over lunch – not to do some weights, not to go for a short run and not even to lounge in the jacuzzi while reading which is always a favorite past time. I loathe a majority of my coworkers, I found mouse droppings on my desk earlier this week which I don’t know about you, is enough to make anyone hightail it out of their job.

It’s taken me all day to even WANT to write this here entry.

Ugh I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’ve enjoyed my day off and my free time and now that i’m in this groove with only a couple days off being a big blob of nothingness…I’m just…blah.

How do you all get yourself out of these types of ruts??

I have totally been there. It’s really amazing how if your job is sucking, it’ll seep into other corners of your life. Honestly I’d look into talking with someone there about your job or… moving on.

Also, if I’m stuck in a cube and moving jobs isn’t something in the foreseeable future, I decorate my cube area. Make it feel more like home and things I love, aside from just pictures. One thing that really helped is I would get like pink carnations or something like that and keep them at my desk.

I get into ruts at work, but it’s usually due to boredom. The good news? They come and go. The challenge is knowing when you’re in a temporary rut, or on a road that leads to nowhere. The latter means you need to move on.

We’ve all been in ruts…fortunately you have two paths to go down – either stick it out and it will get better, or move on and take from this experience.

It sounds trite, but I’m a firm believer in things happening for a reason.

Is your supervisor someone who wants you to succeed and challenge yourself? If so, talk to him or her and see if there are ways you can be creative or learn something new. I’ve been fortunate enough in my job that I’ve been comfortable to say “I’m bored and know I can do better and want to do something different, what can I do?” and have things work out.

Good luck :)

usually when i’m in a rut like this i put on a movie that always puts me in a better mood like love actually, mighty ducks, newsies…random assortment i know, but it helps.

hope you feel better soon!

Oh, I’ve been there, done that and bought the tee shirt! Usually when I’m in a rut, I come home, curl up with a good book and pull a cat into my lap. Sometimes writing in my journal or blogging will help me figure out what the problem is.

Sorry you’re down. If it makes you feel any better, I had mouse droppings on my desk when I got to work this morning. Nothing like cleaning up mouse poop before work!

I’ve totally been in this sort of a rut before… And usually it takes something big to shake me out of it (big could be, say, a weekend trip; running a race; writing a paper – pretty much anything out of the ordinary…)

You’ve had a lot going on lately and working two jobs probably would make most people feel the way you do. I know we all feel that rut creeping up on us from time to time.

When I hit that wall, I either try to take a day to myself and just do whatever mindless thing I feel like or I buy a bouquet of flowers at the store or go somewhere new (like a new store or something).

i think everyone goes through these work slumps… they’re even worse when they align with a life-slump.
i’m lucky enough to not have mouse drops on my desk, but i’ve had to jump up and stand on my chair during conference calls with clients before while waving wildly to get boys to come over and kill the cockroaches, i’m not sure which scenario i consider worse.

you’ll snap out of it. a trip to CT is bound to make everything seem better : )

I’m in a rut too…I don’t know what it is, but it’s definitely at work. I just don’t feel like working, and I don’t feel like concentrating. I would much rather just look up things on the internet, shop, lay out at the pool, etc.

Sometimes I feel like I’m stuck in an eternal rut. The only way to get out of it for me is to do something completely different like a major change. Hence the new job. Getting motivated or inspired to do something is a completely different story. Hence the reason I agreed to run on Friday, I’m motivated to show up because I’ll feel bad if I don’t. Doesn’t mean I’ll be motivated to go by myself next week. Sorry about the job though.

A relaxing weekend will hopefully help! Sometimes you do just have to FORCE yourself to go run or blog or whatever… and hope that the motivation eventually “clicks.”

It’s almost the weekend. That must excite you a wee bit. That is something to look forward to. Summer is the worst for making us all get in a rut. I hope things look up soon.

Oh, I know EXACTLY how you feel. I’m slowly crawling out of an aggravatingly persistent rut of my own. Sometimes life is just overwhelming, and entirely draining. Mostly I think it just takes time–but you’ll get there. It may take a lot of forcing yourself to go things–go to the gym, focus at work, eat dinner–but you’ll pull through.

If you’re not over it after the weekend, we’ll have to grab lunch or something and shake things up. Heck, we should do that anyway :)

Feel better!
