Help me Name My Mac

by Heidi on April 27, 2008

So last night, after the losing nationals game that boyfriend and I spent three innings waiting in line for food and beer at, where they ended up losing 7-0 v. the Cubbies, we came home and he ordered me a mac. A prety white macbook to be specific.

I have a habit…I name my electronics. From day one – my first computer that was mine I have named them. I can’t give an exact reason why other than well…it was neat.

* Computer one – received December 2000 as a Christmas/Graduation gift from my mum. I named the HP tower…Gus. Gus died somewhere right before graduation in 2006 when he needed to be reformatted thanks to a virus per Resnet’s request. Although, Gus was officially recycled last weekend downtown.

* So, sometime middle of senior year, my friend/ex E sold me his laptop which I named Frank. Unfortunately, in a drunken bout after a baseball game and birthday party and before a night out, I wanted to listen to Frank in my room and he was in our living room so me clad in only towel, brought frank back down the hall. Except holding a towel and being half in the bag while balancing a laptop waitress style didn’t work too well and Frank tumbled to the ground. After that, he stopped holding a charge. I never figured out what happened to him but my old roommate tried to fix him by doing open-laptop surgery…it didn’t work out and well…Frank never got put back together. He too was recycled last weekend.

* Enter…Hank. Hank was the compaq computer I bought on my first credit card thanks to best buy. Hank unfortunately had a corrupt hard drive and after two visits to the geek squad, they finally saw what i told them as true, and gave me a full refund and then I bought my current laptop.

* Stan the HP Pavilion that I adore and have been through hell and back with.

But for the past few months since he got his own Mac beauty, boyfriend has told me he’d buy me a mac. Never a man to break his promise, he finally did. And my mac? My beautiful macbook, will be in my hands sometime within the next two weeks. This time – It’s getting shipped to my office.

So what i’m asking of you dear freaders, is a name. I’m going to first take suggestions, with the help of boyfriend, I will narrow it down to three names and will then have a poll. The three names, will be picked by the day it ships out – which will be between Monday and Wednesday (for timing, lets assume Wednesday.) and then the poll will close on the day it arrives with the winner being announced the day after.

To be noted:

I have consistently named my apple products in female names – granted I’ve only had two – a pink ipod mini which was named Pinky (I lacked creativity back then…) but unfortunately, senior year of college en route to a yoga class after lunch with a friend, I neglected to close my cherry coke bottle tightly and threw it into my bag with Pinky. Cherry coke began leaking – i noticed as I saw it dripping out of my bag, and unfortunately….Pinky got into a fight with the cherry coke and lost.

A few months later, Pinky was replaced with my slick new Ipod Nano which I named…Bertha. Bertha, is still going strong.

Rules:

* I don’t repeat names – so Gus, Frank, Hank, Stan, Pinky and Bertha are not an option.

* Typically, my Mac products have been female names. I’d kind of like to keep it that way.

* You can make more than one suggestion. Suggestions close at 11:30pm Eastern Time Wednesday April 30. On Thursday May 1 – sometime before 6pm Eastern Time, polls will open. Polls will close, Saturday May 3rd at 9am Eastern Time and the person who picks the winning name will be sent a $15 Itunes gift certificate.

So enter now, and enter often!

    Pearla?
    Opal?

  • Erin

Yay! I’m not the only one who names my electronics! My ipod is Maxine and my macbook is Maximillian. It’s the whole play on Mac thing.

Anyhow, a pretty new macbook deserves a pretty new name:

    Titania
    Buffy
    Scarlett
    Cinderella

  • http://exeverything.blogspot.com The Exinator

    Maureen.
    Jules.
    BananaFoFana.
    or….

should you change your mind and go with a man’s name I vote for Vladimir.

  • http://exeverything.blogspot.com The Exinator

    Oh and Gwen/Gwennie.

  • http://www.ihatesomuch.com/ Maxie

Maxie the Mac. How cool is that? Oh, thats weird for me to try to get you to name your comp after me? Okay…

how about… shenanigans. I think that’s an awesome name for a computer.

  • http://www.1218blog.blogspot.com/ 1218blog

    Hmmmm….

    Meghan (totally random)
    Apple (like Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter)
    Ellen (like DeGeneres)
    Meredith (like Grey)
    Casey (totally random)

That’s it for now. But I’ll have more soon!

My current Mac is named Lady MacBook (I have a fascination with Macbeth… Yeah, I’m a geek). My last computer was named Judy. Then she completely died and came back to life a little weird, so I renamed her Liza.

Anyway. Lucky for you, I happen to be a bit of a name geek.

Let’s see… You could do a name containing Mac… Most of them are pretty out there…
    - Andromache
    - Aristomache
    - Immaculata
    - Macarena (haha. DUDE! PLEASE!!!)
    - Macaria
    - Macey/Macy
    - Machteld
    - Mackenzie

    Or there’s mythology…
Hippomenes – She beat the fastest woman (Atalanta) by dropping golden apples to distract her. (Apples! Get it?)

Avalon – The island paradise where King Arthur was brought after his death. The name was thought to have originated in the Welsh word for “apple” (afal), as apples are often linked to paradise.

Idony – In Norse mythology Idony was the name of the goddess of spring and immortality. It was her responsibility to guard the gods’ “apples of youth”.

And then there’s the theatre route…
Orinthia — George Bernard Shaw used this name in his play “The Apple Cart”. It may stem from the Greek “to excite/to agitate”.

    Hope those help!

When I name my things (cars, computers etc.) it’s always by accident. The other day my macbook was acting up and I was like “Betsy! Relax!”

And then I paused and was like… Betsy? Hmm, okay!

MY car’s name is Felipe, and my previous car was Bianca. So… a wide range of names, haha.

How about Coco? Or something absurd like Aphrodite.

  • http://www.larissalmarks.com Larissa

Rosita. Give her some ethnic flair!

  • amandabtv

My friend named her apple Fiona. It takes a minute to get…in my case at least. I kind of like Betina. I don’t know why though.

  • http://www.clevergirlgoesblog.blogspot.com tia

    mary.

you know, like the rhyme. “miss mary mac(k) mac(k) mac(k), all dressed in black black black with silver buttons buttons buttons all down her back back back!”

the hand-clappy rhyme? no? no one else? just me and renee? ok then.

    my other vote is macadamia.

    and sophia.

    I’m so jealous!

If you want a pretty name – I like Lilly.

Or, since you have been a bit….clumsy? Gracie.
    :)

Or Princess Consuela Banana Hammock :P

  • http://halfdesertedstreets.blogspot.com Lauren

My mac’s name is Staypuff, like the marshmallow man from Ghostbusters (since it’s white). I like to think i’m witty. My Ipod’s name is Red, in reference to its color and the fraggle from Fraggle Rock. So, like you, I name EVERYTHING.

Congrats on the new mac. You’ll adore it. I adore mine!

    As for a name…
Darcy? For some reason I like that name.

  • http://www.newlyweddedwife.com Laurie

I’m eyeing up a new laptop, and Mac’s are intriguing me. I’ve always been a PC girl – a little nervous of the change. Maybe you could do a post on switching from a PC to a Mac?!!

    As for the name…

I suggest Millicent, Milly for short. Milly the Mac! Or if she’s acting up, you could call her by her full name, “Millicent, you better not freeze up on me!”

  • caitlynintherye

I was going to say Henry, but we can feminize it to Henrietta.
I always name my cars- my first Jeep was named “Toots” because that’s what my guy friends called me. My second Jeep is Coco.

I kind of like Laurie’s suggestion for Millie too…that’s my neighbor’s dog’s name.

  • http://bloggingbarbie.wordpress.com bloggingbarbie

  • http://sannyp.blogspot.com thatShortChick

first off, i just have to say what an INCREDIBLE boyfriend you have for buying you a mac!! very lucky girl. i want a mac so badly i can’t even see straight.

    anyway, onto the naming contest:

    1. Mackenzie (had to throw in a mac tie-in)
    2. Nancy (that name always sounds like a woman who’s gonna take care of business)
    3. Maeve the Mac

i name my car but i’ve never thought about naming my electronics. i just always view them as my name-less children, since i don’t have actual kids or pets.

  • http://talenttoplay.blogspot.com Playful Professional

I named my car Shaniqua but that just doesn’t seem fitting for a MAC. What about Sally or Bessy. Those are both kind of more like cars names… hmm how about Viv or Izzy or Maddy(ie).

  • http://www.angelaboration.com Angela

    Also…

    Maxwell.
    (reminds me of Get Smart)

    Or “Mac the Knife”.
    Haha.

We went to the Nats game on Friday and also waited three innings in line for food. We were furious and there will be an angry letter dispatched post-haste. At least the Nats won, though, and with a walk-off homer, too.

  • http://melanieblair.blogspot.com Melanie

    Regina Filangee
    Sally
Mariellen (like Mary Ellen only one word)

  • http://freeandflawed.com freeandflawed

    Chloe.

This doesn’t fit the trend with all of the “M” names above, but I thought it sounded pretty.

I also like Andie. I know that’s a boy name, but it could also be a girls name. Actually I like Andie and Chuck. Chuck because of the character from Pushing Daisies. She’s precious.

  • Lexi

    Or Matilda.

  • Danielle

    Wendy
    Lindsay
    Zoe
    Chelsea
Joba! (not a girl’s name, but it’s still AWESOME.)

It’s funny that Gwen and Chris Martin’s baby is named apple.

You should name your Apple, Moses. I know that’s not a girls name.

    Pineapple!
    Zoe
    Fiona (Apple hee)
    MacIntosh
Granny Smith … or granny for short
    Pink Lady

Okay now I’m just naming types of Apples and getting hungry.
