A bookclub…of sorts

by Heidi on April 25, 2008

I’m hoping to get out early today, occasionally on Fridays when my boss is in a good mood, she’ll let us out early. That’s always fun for me :)

Last night was my first book club meeting. The book club I sort of recruited for and created and planned. I like planning things, I like being an organizer and I like being in charge. Mostly it’s because I’m neurotic, OCD and feel the need to be in control of everything because I worry that if I’m not it’ll get all kinds of fucked up.

My thougths?

1. Who knew it took freakin’ FORTY-FIVE MINUTES to get from Crystal City to Dupont! I mean honestly? I know I left work about 10-15 minutes late and it takes almost 10 minutes to walk my slow ass to the metro but seriously??!!! That four minute wait on the red line was the longest four minutes I’ve ever waited.

2. Two of the gals were already there. it turned out to only be three of us but it worked – the conversation was abundant, random and fun. I’m definitely looking forward to hanging out with these girls again.

3. We did talk about the book…we also talked about a bunch of other random things but that just made it more fun.

4. Alero? Is tasty tasty mexican food. I mean I love mexican food so generally I like to be critical about the quality of mexican restaurants (not that I can really judge since i’ve never had…genuine mexican food) but I do know bad mexican when i see it. This? Was probably an 8 on a scale of 1-10. The margaritas were especially tasty. Mmm….margaritas.

5. It was nice to meet some new gal pals. I’m looking forward to hanging out with them again. I can’t describe how happy I’ve been just…meeting new people and not being so dependent on boyfriend for social interaction. It’s nice to remember how social i USED to be and sort of get back to that by making new friends and meeting new people.

6. As such, I went home, and I was happy. Like genuinely happy. Boyfriend and I lounged on the couch – I’m addicted to Trish’s book and last night it made me cry (Trish – you = awesome btw. Freakin’ awesome.) at one point so there I was on the metro listening to God knows what on my Ipod and just wanting to sob my eyes out because the picture she paints is one that I’ve seen before and the emotions it brings up? Are heart wrenching.

7. Did i mention one of the awesomest parts of these gals was we all have pretty much the same taste in books. We all like…the lighter stuff. Everyone loved the first book so kudos for me for picking out a good one. It’s going to be hard to live up to that…

So it’s Friday now…tomorrow I’m doing my first ever GUEST POST! *gasp!* but more on that later. Tonight, I’m ah-hem hijacking another recipe off the girls at We Are Not Martha and stopping at Trader Joe’s on the way home so I can pick up the stuff to make their Chicken Lo Mein. I’ve never cooked with a wok before but it should be interesting :) Boyfriend should be home around 8 or so from his thing at the RNC, so we’ll have a nice night in enjoying each others company since we’ve both been busy this week.

What are YOUR plans for the weekend???

I hate having to the metro because I inevitably ALWAYS just miss the train. It makes for a much longer trip that I normally plan. But then I hate parking anywhere near DC either, so it’s pretty much a lose-lose situation. Glad your book club went well. What book did you guys read? I’m thinking of starting a book club with some of my friends here and looking for good book ideas.

Book clubs are awesome!

They are so great when you meet new people that have like tastes too.

We recently opened up our book club to people through Craigslist and it was one of the best things by far ever!

We have gained some really great friends!

I have a book suggestion for you [I just finished it]… If you haven’t read Devil Wears Prada, it’s by the same author [Lauren Weisberger] and it’s called Everyone Worth Knowing. I loved it!
