I am upset….

by Heidi on February 29, 2008

You see I’m picky. About a lot of things. In this case, we’ll use hair.

I wanted to get my hair did before the weddin’ we’re going to up north tomorrow. Just a trim, nothing too dramatic. I never do anything dramatic with my hair.

So, my natural choice given time constraints and my unwillingness to pay more than $40 for a hair cut, put me at Haircuttery. Boyfriend goes to the one up in Dupont and has yet to have an unpleasant experience aside from the ungodly waits on the weekends but he usually goes during the day anyhow since his office is not so far away.

So I went. I sat my butt down and told her i wanted side swept bangs and my hair about shoulder length. I keep it shoulder length…it’s what looks good on me and I’ve wanted to try side swept bangs from last summer but have yet to get the balls to really go all out for them. Last time i got my hair done at the exact same place, they gave me mini-side swept bangs. It’s taken me since I was 16 to grow out my bangs, so it’s especially important to me that these look good because otherwise it’ll take me forever to grow them back out and Lord knows I’ve done a number on my bangs a number of times so I don’t need some non-english speaking broad butchering them.

I have had the same hairstylist since I was a young child. Sans the seven years my family lived in southern Vermont, my mom and I used the same woman who was awesome. She was like a quasi-aunt to me, she cried when i graduated college, high school, did my hair for my proms and any other formal dances I went to and will definitely do my hair for my wedding. I have decided this. Just now. But that doesn’t matter since  I’m not even close to getting married.

Anyhow, when I moved to Boston I tried to find a hairstylist that could tolerate my measly college budget, to no success. So whenever I wanted my hair trimmed, I’d traipse home on the Greyhound and get it done during Laurie’s walk-ins on Saturdays. She had been with three different salons, and recently (a few years ago) started her own salon near Burlington that I try to make it over to everytime i go home, if not for a trim, then atleast for an eyebrow waxing. So when I moved to DC, I determined I needed to find my OWN hairstylist. Once and for all. I’ve tried three. Two different ones at Haircuttery, and one fabulously gay man at Bubbles in the pentagon city mall…who charged me $50. Which is more than I’d like to pay.

But today, today man…I’m pissed. Not only did she barely wet my hair to cut it, she didn’t dry it, she didn’t straighten it, she cut it not short enough then after speaking up she cut it just a touch too short. So now, I have to walk around with a fucking crease in my hair from my pre-trim pony tail holder, and wet hair. I’m pissed. I just hope i can make it look decent for tomorrow. Harrrumph.

Now I know i could have asked for a blow dry but since when do you have to ask for those things?! Since when?!

So for those of you in DC, or near DC or who used to live in DC…where do you go to get your hair cut? Where do you suggest that’s reasonable and the people speak english :( This is…regrettable.

PS i know today was supposed to be a day off from Blog 365 but…i need to vent.

Sometimes you pay for what you get – not meaning to sounds snarky at all. When I lived in Alexandria I went to the Sugar House Day Spa and Salon, they did a pretty good job. Jouvence Aveda in Pentagon City is also really good.

If you want to make the trek to Woodbridge, I have the worlds best hair stylist in my opinion. She is one of only 2 that have never messed up my hair. Statements Salon and her name is Jen – she listens to you and even makes suggestions that are actually good. She will not give you a chop job, and honestly does a great blow out.

Um I HATE hair cuttery. I got my hair cut there (in maryland) 2 years ago and the lady barely took off an inch. You can come here and get a haircut for 16 bucks… that includes shampoo, cut, style. Sometimes I love living in WV.

Be glad she didn’t dry your hair though, because they charge 7 bucks for that. for real.

I’ve cried over bad haircuts/eyebrow waxings. I feel your pain.

If I were you just complain about the person and get a freebie coupon for your bf to use.

I hate getting my hair cut for this reason :(

Plus since my hair is below my shoulders even a trim costs me $50! It’s ridiculous. I’m kind of crazy about my hair though and will pay for it to get done and a nice salon, even if it breaks the bank a bit.

There’s a place right outside of the Friendship Heights metro that my gf in college used to go to often. She loved it. It starts with an A…Atilla maybe?

Finding a good haircut is so so freakin’ difficult. I’ve submitted to going to the woman across the street from my house, where I pay $20 for a DIFFERENT cut every time (even though I ask for the exact same style).

A good hairstylist is a hard thing to come by… I don’t know anyone in DC, but if I hear about someone, I’ll be sure to let you know.

i think it’s hard to find someone who does a decent cut for under $50, honestly. i’ll ask around, i used to work at a salon with a guy who lived in DC. maybe he’ll have some suggestions?
