A few funny things…

by Heidi on February 7, 2008

Apparently boyfriend is giving up the MacBook Air for Lent. This is amusing for a few reasons.

vs.

1. He owns a macbook pro. He loves his macbook pro. Though personally, I liked it better when my HP was better than his 7 year old Sony Vaio. Selfish? Maybe.

2. He does not own a MB Air. Nor will he until I have a little sumthin’ sumthin’ on my left hand. Currently my ice can be seen through our endless credit card bills. And by that I mean when our credit card debt is lowered, and MAYBE when I get a better paying job, then I will happily be able to brag about an engagement. Until then, I can keep dreaming.

3. Can you give up something you don’t have for Lent? This is almost as amusing as him altering meatless Fridays to mean “No RED meat…because he doesn’t see poultry as meat.”  Unfortunately honey, I don’t think thats quite what God meant. So for those of you who will be at the happy hour tomorrow and if you see him eating a grilled chicken sandwhich which he told he he is so looking forward to eating, scold him and tell him he’s going to hell for eating meat.

4. If I don’t post tomorrow, you can be sure he took my blogging privileges away from me. Not that he would do that. He’s an awesome boyfriend. Just a very bad Catholic.

Onto other matters that don’t involve me mocking my silly boytoy.

I finished “Bitter is the new black” by Jen Lancaster.

My Thoughts?

Awesome awesome awesome book. What I loved most about it? Her voice. Some people, when they write,  use nothing but hyperboles, and similes, and big words to make them seem much smarter than they are (I’d like to but unfortunately my public school education was mediocre and I don’t remember that crap. Thats probably also why my College Writing I instructor was the first to make me cry in my college career. Jerk off. Wanna know why? Oh that’s right…he also taught at BC. Fucking Traitor.)

Anyhow back to the book, I love her voice. Her sarcasm, her wit, and the fact that as someone who in the year and a half since she graduated has been fired from a law firm (small. real estate settlement law), worked at a nonprofit that advocated for labor unions (god damned hippies) which i quit when I was hired at a government relations firm with a boss that was certifiably CRAZY and made my coworkers cry on NUMEROUS occasions. And was consequently fired on a Friday afternoon for being “unable to handle the stress”  which came…out of nowhere…but really…was a blessing in disguise (in the four months I worked there she went through three Executive Assistants. See? Crazy.). After that I got a temp job working for a nonprofit that gave zero interest loans and grants to Army soldiers. Then by the end of July I got this job.

Until this point, I had never been fired. I had always gotten the jobs I wanted. So I related to Jen. I felt her pain. I cried when i didn’t get jobs on the hill…it sucks. And the bitterness that she writes of? I’ve experienced that. It was a great book, I loved it. I took time out from work because I couldn’t put it down. Kudos Jen for being honest, blunt and sarcastic and fabulous.

Now onward to the next (which btw is book number 8 of 100.)

Other stuff?

Who here…

a. doesn’t give a shit about Lost? Seriously…I feel like the only freakin’ person on the planet that does not like this show. I watch it. Because boyfriend does, but I don’t enjoy it. Blah.

b. is excited about Lipstick Jungle? I read the book (of course I did!), loved it because Candace Bushnell is AWESOME to me, and am looking to see how closely it follows the book :) I love when movies/shows follow the books.

FINALLY…

I got an email from an author today who’s first book was recently published/put on the shelves who is sending me a copy to read/review! Sweet! I’m excited to read it, and I’m excited to share thoughts with all of you (who care) and possibly have a q&a etc… Look for my review of Eileen Cook’s debut novel Unpredictable.

That just means that people are reading my blog which makes me happpppppyyy :)

I should also note, and this seems so mean, but I am constantly amused when my dog chases her tail. Even more so when she runs into walls/furniture. I love her to bits, but it’s just funny! Though I’m mildly annoyed because she killed her duck. She had a duck that squeeked and it was one of a few toys, and she killed it. By killed it I mean she de-stuffed it. I should also note, that this is the SECOND duck that she has killed…she had an identical one which she previously destuffed. Boyfriend likes to tell me that THIS is why we can not have another pet like a bunneh, or a hamster…or a real duck. All of which I would like. Please don’t think I’m a puppeh hater…i love my puppeh. A lot. She’s just…amusing sometimes. But then she’ll stop and just cuddle. She’s is quite cuddly. And cute. Yesh.

Oh, is that how Lent works? Splendid. Maybe I’ll give up the Prius and house in the suburbs that I don’t own.

And your boyfriend? I like his logic. Good job.

I’m currently reading Bitter is the New Black. I’m almost done! I’ve loved every page of this book. You’re right, her voice is amazing. I love her humor, wit and self-confidence. I love that she wore a black dress to her wedding. I checked out her myspace and website and it’s so awesome that she still talks about the people in the book. It was nice to see the book wasn’t based on fake characters. This is her life.

Awesome, awesome read :)

Giving up something you don’t own is *totally* cheating – haha. This, of course, coming from someone who doesn’t give up anything for Lent.

So glad you enjoyed Bitter is the New Black! Are you going to read Bright Lights, Big Ass next?!? So funny. Although I think I liked BITNB slightly better. I totally agree with you though — love her tone and that she just is what she is and manages to let that show in her writing. Very cool!

I don’t watch Lost. I tivo’ed LJ last night, but have not watched yet.

Have you read the Shopaholic series, by Sophie Kinsella? They are hilarious, and I just read that they are turning the first one into a movie!

For Lent, I am giving up raw cookie dough and goldfish crackers…I eat far too much of both!

I got that email too. But I didn’t respond. I look forward to seeing your review, though.

Also, I’ve never watched Lost and I never want to.

Also again, I think you can only give up something you don’t have for Lent if you had active plans to buy it and then you don’t, specifically because of Lent.

Bailey eats the stuffing out of all of her toys.
But she has killed multiple ducks. She even still likes playing with them after they are dead.

Dogs are WEIRDOS.
