Sports and politics…do they really mix???

by Heidi on October 25, 2007

Ok so i had two huge posts written and decided i hated both of them. That i wanted to be a little more lighthearted. I’ve spent the past three days at events, hearings and on the metro there and back. Far too much time on the metro. I seem to be good in the business of barely missing a metro within getting into the station. But instead of writing up my memo on the patent reform hearing i spent the afternoon at yesterday, I’m finding a ton of articles about presidential politics and baseball.

Now if theres one thing i don’t love more than baseball, hockey and all the sports between, it’s involving a lil politics.

I think presidential politics seem to be presiding more in the GOP field than in the Dem field and that’s okay because democrats can be a bit more wimpy sometimes.

So it started with Rudy Guiliani coming out and cheering for the Red Sox by saying “well i cheer for the American League” and in his defense, I said the same thing in 2004. Especially when my friends dragged me out to the riots following the win. But, i didn’t cheer for the red sox to win, i cheered for the Cardinals to lose because what the fuck do i care about some crap team from corn country??

I digress, so of course, Mitt Romney – the sleezy rascal that he is, trounced on Guiliani for cheering for the Sox. Unfortunately Mr. Romney shouldn’t talk since his family is a stake holder in YES. However, the man shouldn’t talk considering I mean, the man doesn’t get excited about “dirty water,” he probably doesn’t even know the words for “Sweet Caroline” the traitor.

But really come on, Guiliani is only cheering for the sox because he’s AMERICAN!!! I cheer for the American League – in the All-Star game, when i cheer for the Yanks. I mean National League?? No. Who do they have? The Nats? The second to last place team with overly priced tickets for a new stadium that’s directed towards law firms being able to lobby and pay for box seats they can give to lawmakers which…well…now they can’t thanks to the new ethics laws. (The man’s always getting us down!) I digress, the national league sucks. They have the mets…but worst of all up till now they had freakin’ BARRY MOTHER FUCKING BONDS!!!

Excuse my language but Barry Bonds has played the “boston is a racist city” one too many times for me to like him. Ohhh-kay Barry…try saying that shit in Hotlanta and see where it gets you fucker. I hate you Barry Bonds. You suck. And you’re a fucking cheater.

I mean honestly. Barry Bonds. Why am i even wasting my time. It just goes to show that the national league sucks. However this year, instead of cheering for the red sox like i did in 2004 by cheering for the American League, I’m not in Boston so i don’t. give. a. shit. I could careless about the Rockies but their track record is amazing, so i’ll root for them if asked. But i’ve been too busy this week to watch the series, to really care.

The real kicker of my afternoon – aside from the testimony I’ve been reading off and on for the past hour now – has been… the gem that i found from Julie which is simply put…amazing.

Now i’ve dealt with my fair share of bandwagon fans. People accused me, in college, of being a bandwagoner. I became a Yankees fan at the ripe age of 13. In 8th grade – the 1996 world series. I don’t remember who they played but i remember swooning in my 13 year old ways over Andy Pettite, reading of the rookie Derek Jeter. It was Joe’s first or second year as manager, all the greats that we talk about being too old…I fell in love with them when they were all rookies. Take that. I ain’t no mother fucking bandwagoner. I listened to my brother talk baseball since he liked the Bash Brothers in the early 90′s. That was back when he was an A’s fan but no one cares about the A’s now do they???

So I digress, this gem that julie linked to is just…amazing. and true. Boston fas are incredibly annoying, pretentious, and just…annoying. I can’t say it enough. I hated transplants in college – my peers from various areas of the nation – who fell “in love” with the underdog red socks just because we were there. The day after they won the ALCS the girls from Long Island who didn’t give a shit about baseball the day before flocked to the hat stores for their Pink BoSox hats. The Trot Nixon, Johnny Damon, and Jason Veritek shirts were sold out for weeks because wouldn’t you know, every college aged girl wanted in their pants.

The dudes were even more annoying. I can’t give you hard stats on the Yanks. I wish i could, but i can’t. What can i say, maybe i just don’t care to give my life up for sports?? Any sport at that matter. But dudes would constantly berate Arod after he was acquired by the Yanks, berate Jeter, among many others.  Red Sox fans have this…tacky entitlement. Like THEY are the best fans in baseball. Like they’re the only ones who matter all the time. Like because their team was the underdog for so many years, they still are. Hate to break it to you, but with a payroll that’s nearly equal with the Yankees you’re not the underdog anymore. Save that for the Cleveland’s and the Colorado’s of MLB. Teams that legitimately DESERVE getting to where they are, who have built their teams from scratch instead of buying the players who put out the numbers. I can say the Yanks are guilty of buying a lot of their talent…but i think that was a major flaw of Torre’s.

Yes i can see the flaws in my team. Unlike the red sux. I can say that Joe Torre should have found a few more rookies this year, and bringing back Clemens was the worst thing ever. Our pitching is going to be…well…sans Joba and Hughes…i feel as if it might be a bit weak next year. Why do we still have Carl Pavano by the way? Did he even pitch this year????

But this wasn’t supposed to be a yankees fans are better than red sux fans entry. I wanted to  share the articles because i always find it amusing when politics and sports try to mix. I always love when mayors of towns bet on hometown specialties like Menino did with the Mayor of Denver. It’s just neat and brings a lighthearted funness to the game. Hometown pride is what it is and it’s great when politicians like Guiliani – who I had seen on TV at every Yankees ALDS game, can swallow their pride just for the love of the game.

Cause really, baseball is the all american past-time. Why not have a little fun with it??

wow those bosox sure got you riled up! in defense to that juliezilla article, when i went to school in upstate NY (born and bred in MA btw), my car got a brick thrown through the window and egged for having a red sox sticker, & while i’m sure there a bunch of meatball red sox fans who’d probably do the same to a yankee sticker, keep in mind there are couple non annoying fans out there…

    btw Massachusetts hates mitt romney.

hey i smell what you’re stepping in – the yankees universe has their bad apples just like red sox nation does. no fan nation is perfect. Red socks for me are just an easy punching bag ;)
